Robot Lawn Mowers with Built-In String Trimmers: The Next Step in Lawn Automation

The robotic lawn mower market keeps evolving, and the newest innovation aims to eliminate the last bit of manual labor in yard care — trimming the edges. Traditionally, even the best robotic mowers would leave narrow strips of uncut grass along fences, flower beds, and curbs, forcing homeowners to grab a string trimmer to finish the job. But that’s beginning to change. A few manufacturers are now introducing robotic mowers that include or support a string trimmer attachment, making them true all-in-one lawn maintenance machines.

Currently, only two brands stand out for exploring this territory: Segway Navimow and Sunseeker.

Segway Navimow: Mowing and Trimming in One Machine

Segway, best known for its personal transporters, has quietly become one of the most innovative names in robotic lawn care. Their Navimow X-Series models can now be paired with a Trimmer Attachment, turning the mower into a two-in-one system that both mows and edges.

The attachment fits neatly into the mower’s side port and uses a short nylon line to trim areas that the main cutting blades can’t reach — such as along fences, walls, and garden borders. The result is a consistently manicured look without manual cleanup.

According to Segway, the trimmer operates semi-automatically and is compatible with the Navimow X3 and newer Pioneer Edition models. While some regional safety regulations currently limit full automation, the concept itself shows where the industry is headed: toward a mower that can truly finish the job without human intervention.

Key Highlights:

  • Attaches easily to existing Navimow models
  • Ideal for precision edging and tight spaces
  • May require smartphone control in some regions
  • Accessory price around $295 (as of late 2025)

For now, Segway is the only brand offering a true robotic trimmer attachment that physically extends the mower’s reach.

Sunseeker X9: ZeroEdge Trimmer Optional with Robotic Arm (X9 Plus-Standard; X9-Optional)

Sunseeker’s X9 robotic mower model will be launched in 2026 in the US and has the following features:

Designed for big yard, sports field & park, our Sunseeker Elite X9/X9 Plus:
✅5 Fusion Positioning & Navigation System
✅360° OmniSight™ Full Scene System with 8 Cameras
✅4WD+All-Wheel Independent Suspension System
✅90%/42° Climbing Capacity
✅ZeroEdge Trimmer Optional with Robotic Arm (X9 Plus-Standard; X9-Optional)
✅43cm Dual Cutting Disc
✅Fleet(Multi-Mower)Management
✅10 TOPS AI Chip
✅Faster Charging with PioneerVolt™ Technology

While Sunseeker hasn’t yet released a string-trimmer accessory, its mowing path and boundary detection are among the best on the market. For many homeowners, that’s enough to reduce post-mow touch-ups dramatically. And given how quickly robotic mower technology is advancing, a true trimming add-on may not be far off.

What This Means for Homeowners

The arrival of trimmer-capable robotic mowers signals an important shift in home automation. For years, robot vacuums evolved from basic floor cleaners to multi-function moppers — and now, lawn robots are following the same path.

Benefits include:

  • No more manual trimming or edge cleanup
  • Perfectly uniform lawns with minimal effort
  • Reduced noise and emissions compared to gas tools
  • Cleaner, more polished lawn appearance year-round

Of course, there are still practical considerations. The trimmer attachments add cost, setup time, and (for now) may not work completely autonomously. Terrain complexity, flower beds, and regional safety rules can also limit functionality. Still, these are growing pains typical of any emerging technology.

The Future of Lawn Robots

Segway’s Navimow Trimmer is an exciting first step — one that shows what’s possible when robotics move beyond mowing into full-spectrum lawn care. Expect more manufacturers to follow suit, either with attachments or dual-blade systems capable of edge trimming natively.

For now, homeowners looking for a complete hands-free solution should keep an eye on Segway’s lineup. If your goal is to eliminate every bit of manual work from your lawn routine, this is where the future is heading — and it’s closer than you might think.
